learning basic HTML skills ..... for dummies.

If you're building your own website (or Myspace), it's always helpful to learn basic HTML skills. The most useful feature is knowing how to link. This will enable you to access other website & places of interest. Linking has been called "the bread-and-butter" of HTML. There's really a simple formula which applies to everything which you've seen throughout the internet. Whether visiting Newspaper Articles, or, viewing lists of interesting material. It's truly vital to learn the basic sequence which allows embedding HTML.

And, it goes as follows:

<a href='http://place the url_here'>then, give a Title-of-Link here</a>

once again

so, begin with the < symbol, and don't forget to use the ' before inserting your URL. And, of course, another ' is used directly afterward. Then, place the > character. Notice how the sequence begins with a < symbol. (aka Less-than). and, it ends with a > (greater-than symbol). Then, you can type words which will become visible to the viewer. Then , finally, finish with </a>

Here's a good example of how it might look:

But, when it's placed on your webpage, the first URL will NOT be visible. However, clicking the visible words will take you to the hidden URL which you can see above.

There's one tricky drawback to HTML used on the internet. It's easy for spammers to re-direct you to false links. Now, just for laughs, I changed the words "OUR WEBSITE" to a false claim that you've already won alot of money. But, when you click the icon, you'll return to our homepage instead. So, in other words, you can replace any words into this spot. And, that's precisely what the viewer will see. But please: Don't be naughty

. I'm merely showing how others could potentially abuse HTML.

Now, believe it or not, there's actually several different ways to embed codes. Most of the differences are purely cosmetic. So, it's not necessary to demonstrate all. However, here's one alternative method.

notice how you can substitute the Title for a shorter word.
This is useful when space is limited.

Here's a simpler way of remembering the code:

(note: it's not always necessary to use "WWW".
Many websites use http:// and skip the "www.)

And, of course, the HTTP://www. URL/ is not visible when the work is completed.

There are basic functions of HTML Code which apply to everyday usage.

For example: The <br> feature simply allows the new sentence to begin on the next line. For example:

You can write:

and, the finished product will look like this :

Take caution that some older browsers requite </br> instead of <br>

Perhaps, the singular most useful tool for Myspace users is the change of paragraph. This is a simple code which uses <p>. (While some older devices require </p>

okay, there it is. Simple, yet very useful

a final step of learning HTML also hints at it's downside.

You might need to add spaces between pictures or animations,
in order to prevent them from looking clustered.

So, here's the HTML code: &nsb;

Yes, you've read that correctly. And, the only response is "YIKES !"

SO, this basically means, you must input that dreaded code, just to add a space between codes.

Many people make the mistake of forgetting the "&" symbol. Or, leaving out the ";" suffix.
SO, just remember: you MUST include all 6 characters: & N B S P ; ( ).

and, for heaven's sake, DON'T Mix up the letters, either. (Some people might accidentally spell nsbp;)

Now, here's the most tricky part: You must use this entire code for each and every space.

For example:
in order to move forward 4 spaces, you must repeat the entire code 4 times.

So, here's how it might look:

(I'm So Happy)     
(Happy)     
(Not Sad)   nbsp;      (THE END).

It will look like this:
(I'm so Happy) (Happy) (Not Sad) (THE END).

Also take notice, this feature can be unpredictable. Some websites will create longer spaces than others. While, other websites mistakenly add an "&" symbol to the code.

SO, once again: Here's the basic code to perform this feature:

Now, here's the final lesson upon strengthening those HTML skills. It's possible to replace Simple words with eye-catching photographs. Amongst other things, it's more likely to catch the attention of websurfers.

And, it helps to build superb graphics when creating links. For example: which would you prefer clicking?

Or, the actual icon fully complete with dazzling graphics:

(Just remember, too many icons can cluster the website). But, it's alot easier to locate pictures, than words. Here's a good comparison. Did you ever notice that it's easy to search through your collection of DVD's purchased from the store? While, those which are unmarked (or pirated) tend to be more difficult to organize. It's the same principle, here. Linking pictures can make faster referencing.

Let's try the described method,
in order to send viewers directly to the homepage.
Later on, you can try using your own code from websites, such as Flickr & Photobucket.

...and here's the finished product. clicking the picture below now sends you to the homepage. So, essentially, the Thumbnail remains, but the Large picture has been replaced with the linking feature. Needless to say, this could be done with any photograph. But please, don't be deceptive when building your website.

there's one final "confession". The two (jollyoldsaintnick.net) photos above are actually different from one another. Did you notice? They look exactly the same, to a non-observer.
This is why folks should be careful when surfing the web.

A Visible symbol first appears, such as ♣ ♥ ♦

These are written by using &clubs; &hearts; &diams;

In order to create Special Characters,
(such as ♥♣♦)   ...each uses a simple HTML code.
They usually begin using the & character on your keyboard.

Then, input a sequence of specific characters.  (example: hearts )
Usually followed by the ; symbol, afterward.
       SO, all must be written in sequence.

FOR EXAMPLE: &hearts; will create the ♥ character.

♦ &diams; (or, try: ♦)

♠ &spades; (or, try: ♠)

A previous page, [How TO Use HTML] demonstrated how to use basic HTML codes, along with a few linking features. There are other methods which can be used, as well. We're all familiar with common appearance of Links. Here's a different method which creates a unique "BOXY" effect.

These Boxed Links create a unique effect.
First, notice how they're larger, and more graphic.
It provides more than simple linking features.

ALSO, notice how the Box changes color when hilighted.

Plus, did you realize that the Box technique literally "out-smarts" Firefox.
And, the URL is not revealed at the far bottom left.

There are a few things worth mentioning.
This HTML code is not officially recognized by W3 Schools.
Additionally, there's more than one way to input the code.
and, either way, it produces the exact same effect.
Below, you'll find each code which produces the Boxy appearance.
It's quite self-explanatory, if you've already ready the previous instructions.

FOR INFO.COM THE SEQUENCE GOES AS FOLLOWS:
(You could replace the search/info.com/santaclaus with a simpler instruction)

For NEXPLORE, The sequence is obviously similar.
Mrs. Claus is simply replacing the URL link & the Title.

However, it might be confusing to learn that the sequence "GET ACTION" could be replaced by "FORM ACTION". and, the method="GET" could also be replaced with "SEARCH". But, this might get too complicated.

Also note: These methods could be expended upon, in order to create easier reference within your website. This is strictly for skilled professionals. However, it demonstrates the possibilities.

They are not meant to be a reliable source for practical use.

Note that you cannot magically Index your website with a simple code. It requires detailed work from Professional Designers. They would carefully INDEX each page for easy reference. You cannot go at it, alone.

There's also a final piece of discouraging information:

Most major Search-Engines deliberately use cryptic letters on their Search Bar. And, it's frequently subject to change, as well.

COLORS, Rss Feeds, and Background

You've probably wanted to learn how to link, using RSS feeds.
Unfortunately, it's not simple, or straight-forward.
And, it requires more effort than simply giving URL information.
♣Worse yet♣ , RSS codes vary amongst differing websites.
Thus, there's no standard formulae.
                  And, one basic code cannot be used universally.

There's more grim news:
           many websites only allow RSS feeds to their home page.
In other words: They don't allow you direct access to all areas.
For example: If you wanted to Feed to a specific Youtube Channel, or Yahoo Group, the feed would generally be unsuccessful.

Plus, aside from all else, feeds sometimes display graphic-errors.
For example:
MRS. CLAUS placed an RSS feed on the bottom of this page, and it caused undesired effects. Thus, the feed was removed, in order to prevent further problems. So perhaps, ordinary linking features can be used, when RSS fails .

Okay, here's an actual RSS feed to a gaming blog (on Blogger):

   http://gamingcodes.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

    So, the basic code for a BLOGGER Rss feed is:
   http://Title Here.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt-rss

WOW, that's alot more complicated than anyone would have guessed.

Mrs Claus would have assumed,
   perhaps a RSS feed merely requires a direct URL,
        such as
[ http://gamingcodes.blogspot.com/rss ]
                   HOWEVER, this simplified code would NOT work.

Even worse, the RSS code varies from site to site.
   Thus,
   the feed necessary for Blogger will not work on YOUTUBE's feed.

   I just wanted to give a quick heads-up, regarding this issue.
So, at least, you're now aware that RSS feeds require an exact code.

It's relatively simple to create a background for most independent websites.
In contrast, Social Networking websites might require additional effort.

Instead of giving a detailed lesson, it's quicker to give a brief example.

SO, in case you're curious;
Here's the HTML code for the background (clouds) currently being used for this web-page:

You'll notice precisely where the photograph originates.
It comes from the Popular website, Flickr.com.

The photograph can obviously be replaced, by choosing a different URL Path.
<body background="http://choose any URL as your photograph">

It's also worth mentioning,
MRS. Claus has no idea why the "farm5.static.flickr.com URL works,
while the ordinary URL to this same photo does not work correctly.
It required a little "trial and error", rather than knowledge.

♥ Now, of course, there are additional tricks which could be applied, as well.

This next HTML Code has additional options, such as choosing Width, and height.
But, hopefully, you've gotten a basic idea of how Mrs. Claus applies her backgrounds.

So, the URL link can be changed to another JPG image,
as well as, other varying formats; such as .png or .gif.

The JPEGs are the simplest. And require the least disk space.
While .GIFs sometimes have the ability to create motions, such as falling snowflakes or animated characters.

and, PNG.s can create transparency effects, and what-have-you.

Finally, the code can be simplified, with little noticeable affects.
Or, it could written in a more complex manner.

For example: notice how these 2 codes are written.
......Yet, both produce the exact same affects.

In the previous code,
the [width="500" and height="500"] dimensions were removed.
But the background still looks basically The same.

Also, some people choose to simplify their code even further.

If they're taking a photograph directly from the same website where the background derives,
they simply input the direct folder location.

For example:
The finished HTML would look something like this:


   But, the exact location might be incorrect. So, this method might not work.

The exact location might be "Folders/photos/rainbow.jpg"

   Or, "FilesAndFolders/rainbow.jpg"
   or, "netshellhost064007/@host.com/photos/rainbow.jpg"

So, as you can see,
          the most direct approach might NOT work correctly,
unless you're 100% sure of the path.

Mrs. Claus uses this code, and she places it near the bottom.

However, many sites require an Editor.
and, they recommend placing the code near the top,
just after the <style type="text/css"> ledger.

It depends on whether or not you have a simple website editing software.
